The cost of the overhaul was financed from public fund-raisers as well as donations from banks, businesses and private individuals. The collection of exhibits also started at that time. At present, the museum is run by the Polish Barrack Association in Taagerup and financed from admission fees, donations and local authority funding.
In 1984, thanks to the efforts of Torsten Elsvor a journalist, social activist and a man dedicated to the protection of the cultural heritage of the island of Lolland, work started on an overhaul of the building of Polakkaserne, the last preserved on the island of Lolland, with a view to turning it into a museum.
